Media Representations

This week I watched videos about media ethics and the potential implication for society but mainly focusing on representation in media. Representation is how media like tv, films and books can portray certain types of people or communities.   There are many reasons to why representation matters. It's to give people and culture a voice, they can share their experiences, it represents cultures and shares stories. It is vital for every person, whether in front of the camera or behind the scenes to have a voice. We are constantly seeing content that's very white, and straight. I believe with time things are changing, with my experience of growing up has been quit positive when on the topic of representation. We have had such a participation through social media on "black lives matter" and "pride"(pride even has its own month). This is all fantastic especially with the next generation people's voices are becoming louder and hopefully someday we will live in...

Final Rewrite

I have learned many things through my experience of re-writing. Re-writing is something I have never took participation in before however, it is very beneficial. It made me see how far I have come from the beginning of blogging to now, and the difference in between. Feedback is mainly perceived as a very daunting thing for people which I believe to be true, because we always think the worst. I received feedback of my own from my fellow class mates(as an assignment) and  my lecturer and they all have been very positive experience for me, it was almost like feedforward instead of feedback which I spoke about in a previous blog post.  I read a few articles giving us advice for improving common academic writing issues. One which grabbed my attention was "How to make your writing more concise". Concise writing is using the most effective/strong words in your day to day articles/blogposts etc. They give many examples, which you learn by replacing words it can make your senten...

Rewrite #3

Image
I have read two articles on reading techniques, one helped us to learn and understand critical reading techniques and the other was on active reading, both feeding us mountains of information with how we can get work/study done in a more sufficient way.   When I read about critical reading techniques, I found it to be very insightful for future readings/study. You should always know what you are reading was a point that really stood out to me because in truth not everyone does. From my own experience of secondary school majority of people would be asking their friends what topic/page we were on, because they had lost track due to their lack of understanding. School subjects are so broad that you  are not  going to be the best in every class, but you also  should not  be afraid to raise your hand when you do not understand something. But with time confidence grows.    In the article it  states  that it is key to make sure  you are ...

media compression

Image
At the beginning of this assignment I have heard about compression related to media however I never gave it a second thought to what it actually is. Media compression is basically reducing file size and saving disk space. There are two types of compression, Lossy- This is when information is removed or lost. Lossless- This means that it is important that no information is lost or changed. I watched many videos from YouTube which I will link below on topics of compression like video/audio compression, changing size etc. Video compression works mainly by minimizing redundancy in the video data. The use of words/data that could be taken out without losing the meaning or function of the video. This could be simply done by taking snippets of repetitive stories/information within the video out. There are two ways to compress a video; Spatial compression/Intraframe= JPEG. form and Temporal compression/interframe= .MPEG  BITRATE is how much information your video sends out per secon...

Finishing Production

Image
My group project as I spoke about previously is "play, agency and interactive narrative." We are just coming up to production stage now and I'm very happy to say we have a lot of work done. We know the order the video will go in and know what each person has/wants to say.  This week our survey went live which we shared to our Instagram's, our friend groups and also Creative digital media year one and two. We want to gain as much knowledge about the public and gaming as possible that's why we shared it to a large variety of people to get fair results. The response so far has been over 80 people and that's with it just being uploaded under 24hours.  After, we went and spoke about what each of us want to say and how to make all topics flow together. We watched videos on YouTube to get a greater insight into how to introduce and finish our video because we have a fair idea on what content to put in between but were blocked in how to begin the video. We decided t...

Technological Evolution

Image
Mopple Videos (2020) YouTube Today I watched several videos on how digital media has evolved and what the future may look like. Digital media includes any format or device used to convey content using digital signal. In the first video we watched how from 10million years ago humans first tools were stone, wood, bones etc to what we have now. In 1973, the first mobile was created and from the image above you can see how the Apple iPhone has evolved creating the first touch screen phone in 2007. To date the most popular phone company is Samsung with Apple coming in at second place. I was surprised at this as I tend to hear most about apple, and it seems to be what majority of my friends and family would use. We were even told at the beginning of college how MacBook's were the best laptop if possible to buy.  In the second video we watched how media literacy has changed and the world B.C was just literacy; a world where people got their information through talking and if you we...

Peer Review #2

This week we both gave and took feedback from our fellow college students. In the beginning I found it very daunting as we all appear in different groups within class, and I didn't want to offend anybody else's work as we are all on the same level of learning.  I reviewed two of my fellow classmates blogposts on "Media Ethics" which we all have learned and wrote about in previous weeks. Both blogs were very different one included the writers opinion throughout, and the other was quit factual. This is my second time to give feedback and I can already feel the benefits from doing this. Giving feedback can be very difficult for some especially when you don't know where to start. You want to be kind but also firm in order for the writer to gain knowledge themselves. We learned about the acronym 'SPARK' when reading Mark Gardner's article on "Teaching Students to give Peer Feedback" and how to keep this in mind when reading and giving feedback t...

Media Literacy

Media Literacy is the practices that allow us to access, critic and create media. It is intended for us to promote awareness on how we may be influenced by media, creating an active stance to consuming and creating media. I read up on two opinion pieces talking about media literacy. In the first reading; "Digital Media Companies found lacking in helping users understand the online environment" stated that 62% of Irish people were concerned about misinformation online, and who could blame them. Each day I come across misinformation on the likes of twitter/Instagram such as others opinions, or filters which makes a person look completely different, or somebody pretending to be someone they are not. Pillar D is a code of practice on disinformation giving poeple the decision on what to do when coming across misleading information. This basically helps the consumer control what they would like to view therefore personalizing their feature pages. Although Facebook and Google clai...

Moving towards Production

Image
My group project title is "Play, Agency and Interactive Narrative". In the beginning of being assigned this project I was thrown, as this is not my comfort zone. I am not a gamer and know very little about games but I was opened to learning something new. In my group there are four people; Oscar, Kailan, Finn and myself. We all read through the list of topics that we need to speak about in our video and assigned two topics to each person.  I choose to research and speak about mobile apps, and reasons we game? I found so much information on both topics. I learned what is the most popular mobile app today, who designed it, and how far it has reached out into the world. I then looked up reasons why we game and got the idea to speak about how it can be a huge help to people dealing with autism. I decided I would like to include this piece of information in the video when speaking to a friend of mine who's brother deals with autism himself and he told me how gaming has impac...
