Technological Evolution
Mopple Videos (2020) YouTube
Today I watched several videos on how digital media has evolved and what the future may look like. Digital media includes any format or device used to convey content using digital signal. In the first video we watched how from 10million years ago humans first tools were stone, wood, bones etc to what we have now.
In 1973, the first mobile was created and from the image above you can see how the Apple iPhone has evolved creating the first touch screen phone in 2007. To date the most popular phone company is Samsung with Apple coming in at second place. I was surprised at this as I tend to hear most about apple, and it seems to be what majority of my friends and family would use. We were even told at the beginning of college how MacBook's were the best laptop if possible to buy.
In the second video we watched how media literacy has changed and the world B.C was just literacy; a world where people got their information through talking and if you were lucky/rich you would have exchanged letters this was an expensive way to communicate. However in 1452, the moveable type printing price was created where books could be printed. As media became cheaper more people had the means to become literate, this was a problem for the government.
The Penny Press was then created, this was a newspapers which literally cost a penny anybody could have one. However while popularity of the paper grew it was no longer worried about educating the public but to make more money. In the mid 1800's the Penny Press made so much money they only worried about profit instead of truth leading to untrustworthy news! There use of image would be drawn overly dramatic to what could have happened because they had no cameras back then.
In the 20th century after the Penny Press the first motion picture came to life in the1890's and popular cultures took the first step off the printed page. Decades upon decades passed bringing music and radio into our home and how the television came in the 1950's.
Before mass media people wanted to know how to access the media which now its too easy to access unwanted websites etc. We started to question if people had too much? People begin to resist and we seemed in Great Danger. This was called 'Protectionism' there are 3types:
- Cultural Defensiveness
- Political Defensiveness
- Moral Defensiveness
In video 4, we watched how our world has and will change, especially after the effects of Covid19. I believe more people will start to work from home full time and we have a lot more people wanting to blog after the tragic event. We then looked at how humans will be replaced with machines stating that 85million jobs to be lost in the next 5years but also how 95million new roles may also become available. Companies want to start upskilling their workforce because you don't want to be left behind. Introducing new opportunities like:
- Devops Engineers
- Artificial Intelligence Specialists
- Digital Marketing Managers
- Talent Acquisition Specialists
- Customer Success Specialists.
Overall, these videos included mountains of information on how we are evolving and when you sit down and hear about it when I actually turn around I can see it. I work in retail and even in these places people are upskilling their staff, giving them yearly/monthly assessments and even being given the opportunity to go on courses for them to gain a better understanding or work their way up the ladder.
