Introduction to Emma

   

                                                      

My full name is Emma Kate Grace O' Connor. I am a twenty three year old female. I have long ginger hair, blue eyes, my skin is super pale with hundreds of freckles.

I am from a town called Newbridge, which is in county Kildare. I live with my mam and dad. I have a sister her name is Chloe but she lives out of home as she is older. I have lived here my whole life. I have gone to school from age four to eighteen in this town and I have participated in many extra curriculums.

Hobbies I have loved over my childhood and teenage years include dancing, singing, baking, I also played the drums and took part in badminton during my first few years of secondary school. I began dancing when I was only four years old and made the decision to leave early this year. The stage school I was involved with was called Stage Academy, based in Newbridge where I went on to participate in many competitions(see image below). We were crowned All Ireland Champions in years 2014, 2015 and 2017. I also took part in many school shows just for fun and to meet more students.

My love for baking comes from my nan, who I was extremely close with. From a young age I watched her bake and would always be around her in the kitchen to give her a helping hand.

Playing the drums was so different for me as I was very girly growing up. My mam loved seeing Chloe and I involved in many things and wanted us to take on an instrument, so that was when my love of drumming began. I started playing them at twelve years old. I had a little mad streak in me and my music taste was very different to most of my friends. I loved the likes of the famous Phil Collins, Fleetwood Mac etc.

After my time in school I had no idea what I wanted to do with the rest of my life, most important of all my career. I studied beauty therapy for a year and realised it really was not my cup of tea which led me to take a year out and work full time in retail. I then applied for college and received a place in 2019, however decided to defer the course and try out make-up, where I then went on to study in Sharleen Collins Academy up in Dublin.

Now I work part time and have only decided what I would like my career to be. I choose to study Creative Digital Media in TUD. I am Blanchardstown based and I am so happy. I am looking forward to learning how to use cameras properly and really getting creative with my work. For some lockdown last year was horrific, however I am very lucky to say it was one of the best things for me. It gave me time to research different career paths and really focus on myself.

I have read two articles on reading techniques, one helped us to learn and understand critical reading techniques and the other was on active reading, both feeding us mountains of information with how we can get work/study done in a more sufficient way. When I read about critical reading techniques, I found it to be very insightful for future readings/study. You should always know what you are reading was a point that really stood out to me because in truth not everyone does. From my own experience of secondary school majority of people would be asking their friends what topic/page we were on, because they had lost track due to their lack of understanding. School subjects are so broad that you aren't going to be the best in every class but you also shouldn't be afraid to raise your hand when you do not understand something. Digital Media

Today I will be writing a blog about three videos I watched based on digital literacy, what it is?why it matters? And the elements of digital literacies.    Digital media to me consisted of things like my phone/laptop/iPad and how I have the access to a wide range of information. The video made me think about how much has evolved within digital media for things like how quickly we can access information we are not even looking for, for example advertisements before YouTube videos. Another scary thing can be how others get caught up in what people are portraying online that we almost forget to question, what if this article, picture, or post isn't all that true? I thought working in the digital media sector these days you would have to be extremely skilled in software developments/updates, you would need serious communication skills(however that's a given in majority of jobs) and being able to work PowerPoint/photoshop/HTML etc.  In these videos and some res...

Media Representations

  This week I watched videos about media ethics and the potential implication for society but mainly focusing on representation in media. Representation is how media like tv, films and books can portray certain types of people or communities.   There are many reasons to why representation matters. It's to give people and culture a voice, they can share their experiences, it represents cultures and shares stories. It is vital for every person, whether in front of the camera or behind the scenes to have a voice. We are constantly seeing content that's very white, and straight. I believe with time things are changing, with my experience of growing up has been quit positive when on the topic of representation. We have had such a participation through social media on "black lives matter" and "pride"(pride even has its own month).
