Reading Techniques

I have read two articles on reading techniques, one helped us to learn and understand critical reading techniques and the other was on active reading, both feeding us mountains of information with how we can get work/study done in a more sufficient way.

When I read about critical reading techniques, I found it to be very insightful for future readings/study. You should always know what you are reading was a point that really stood out to me because in truth not everyone does. From my own experience of secondary school majority of people would be asking their friends what topic/page we were on, because they had lost track due to their lack of understanding. School subjects are so broad that you aren't going to be the best in every class but you also shouldn't be afraid to raise your hand when you do not understand something. But with time confidence grows.

In the article it states that it is key to make sure you're in a comfortable space. Library's are amazing for this which is so obvious but not everyone uses them. People think home is best but only if it's a comfortable quiet space that helps you stay focused. I use to go down to the library in my home town to study because I live in a very active home where people are constantly coming and going with extra curriculums/dinner times. These are great and its a very happy home but not the best for a quiet space.

Active reading is reading something with a determination to understand. Things to help you succeed and gain the most from your reading. Helpful tips are highlighting key words/phrases. Keep notes in the margins to help you. Things to avoid when note taking:
  • Don't write everything
  • Don't lose track
  • Keep notes organized
  • Make sure you have all references.
I took many notes down to keep reminder of these reading techniques and will even use some that I haven't yet tried ike studying in chunks (15-20minutes). One I find to be the most used is scanning/skimming technique. I find this the best possible way to learn. Scanning the page is great for ideas and could even be used at the beginning of reading something new. It is the headings in bold writing, the images giving you the knowledge of what you are about to read/learn. Skimming to me would be the same however you read a little more than just headings for example you would read the beginning or end of paragraphs. I found this as a learning curve in the studying/reading world for me.
