Peer Review #2
This week we both gave and took feedback from our fellow college students. In the beginning I found it very daunting as we all appear in different groups within class, and I didn't want to offend anybody else's work as we are all on the same level of learning.
I reviewed two of my fellow classmates blogposts on "Media Ethics" which we all have learned and wrote about in previous weeks. Both blogs were very different one included the writers opinion throughout, and the other was quit factual. This is my second time to give feedback and I can already feel the benefits from doing this.
Giving feedback can be very difficult for some especially when you don't know where to start. You want to be kind but also firm in order for the writer to gain knowledge themselves. We learned about the acronym 'SPARK' when reading Mark Gardner's article on "Teaching Students to give Peer Feedback" and how to keep this in mind when reading and giving feedback to ones work. SPARK stands for Specific, Prescriptive, Actionable, Referenced and Kind; these are steps to guide you. I feel I benefited from this and it even gave me some confidence in what to say.
We also read another article about the power of giving feedback and I totally agree with what it states. I read about how a study was carried out for students to take each others essay questions home, give feedback and this resulted in them receiving higher grades after. They said it helped them gain a deeper level of understanding the questions. From my own experience I can see how this happens because when I was reading the first blog post I was assigned to give feedback on, I found myself asking more questions and learning because this one specific person defined what "The Medium is The Message" in a simpler way than described online, which I thought helped me out hugely.
I also read up on feedback that was given to me on my blogpost and it gave me a sense of both pride in my work but also to take a step back and work a little harder/longer on some parts for example I'm still getting use to the whole referencing side of writing.
Overall I have had a pleasant experience when receiving and giving feedback. I think seeing others work can help each person(not to copy one another's work) but learn to add or remove from writing.
