Study Skills
Today I watched three videos on the concept of reading. They mainly included active reading and study strategies, which are amazing help when being a new college student. Some ideas they spoke about were very similar to the way I would've studied for the likes of the leaving certificate and level five exams.
In the first video we learned about the top three science based study tips from Mike, which were quizzing, spacing and mixing subjects. My main method of study and I personally think is most commonly used would be quizzing, I would always use this on myself after a few minutes of studying and I feel this gets the best results.
When it comes to active reading I would have never really considered doing this before because I feel I need to read the book in full to completely understand what's going on, and the fear of missing a major chapter or part. I do think this video that Thomas Frank has created, changed my mind on it because there are so many ways of active reading I never knew about, and will be using in my future studies. He spoke about using flag notes, because marking a book may damage it. He also spoke about backward reading and how it can conclude things more sufficiently which I thought was a very smart move. I also loved the idea of Sudo skimming as this is what I will be most interested in using.
I enjoy reading more than writing because I think everybody can interpret a story or a poem in their own way, than the author may have wrote. They take us on a different journey each story they write. I remember studying poems in English class and how each one could tell multiple stories if not knowing the facts.
The last video I watched was based on Media literacy which is seen daily by all ages. We see advertisements on all social media platforms today, and have to think to ourselves what is it they are portraying to people? As we all tend to see different things as it may be wrote or shown to us. It is a positive thing for children as it makes them judge the product or information being shown. It can also give them an understanding to the role of media today and how it makes us think or act in certain ways.
To conclude each video thought me something that I was not all that familiar with. Mainly Active reading strategies as it made me question a number of things like, Is each part significant to the story? What is the theme of this book or are there multiple themes? It grabbed my attention completely and will try a few tips when reading again next.
