Revising Writing.

We rewrite to learn, we turn our past mistakes of writing into something more approachable to read. I haven't received feedback on any of my posts however have many experience in the rewriting world.

I read four articles based on improving my academic writing, these will be huge help for rewriting in the future. They spoke about paragraphs, sentences which all seem pretty standard but as you get older your writing has to follow up many levels than just secondary school writing.

A paragraph speaks about one idea in a series of sentences. It should be approximately 5-6 sentences and includes 250 words. Paragraphs give structure to your reading. The layout is the first thing a reader see's when turning the page and it wouldn't be satisfactory to see a bunch of words together with no break. The should be divided into three sections;

  • Beginning- this will be the topic sentence.
  • The Middle- Supporting the issue being raised.
  • The End- Conclusion.

 I also read an article on 9 basic ways to improve your style in a academic way (Berkley Student Learning Centre 2021). I feel like this was so helpful especially when rewriting my articles. I actually went and had a look over all my blog posts and personally I can see improvements in my writing already.

I learned a lot of things when it comes to punctuation. That the semi-colon (;) how it compliments a sentence, and that a double dash is like a drum roll making reading more enjoyable. I use to study speech and drama throughout secondary school and we learned little tips and tricks like this, but that was always in script form that you would have to act out, when you see it in books these little things create the dramatics for you which is great entertainment for the reader.

Make sure to question your work and look to see if everything has been including. They say in article three "Paragraph-Level Revision Questions"( Berkley, Student Learning Centre, 2021) to highlight that you have your topic sentence, your evidence and conclusion making sure each point is relevant.

I think rewriting can be very daunting for some especially if you are happy with your work and get negative criticism. I think it is so important to go and ask for help in these times by turning to these articles (linked below) .
