Peer Review #1

Feedback or feedforward? In this blog I will be discussing things I have learned from reading 4 articles and my own experience of reviewing two of my peers work.

I prefer the term feedforward after reading Marshal Goldsmith article "Try Feedforward instead of Feedback" ( marshallgoldsmith.com/articles, 2015) He spoke about it being a more positive way of helping someone to grow/learn. Feedback mainly focuses on failures in the past which can be very daunting for some but also can be very awkward when giving negative feedback. Feedforward gives someone discipline, but is also a way for them to not make the same mistake twice like an alternative and how to turn the negative past into a present positive, this gives people more of a confidence boost rather than lowering their self esteem and work ethic.

Feedforward has many benefits it:

  • People listen more.
  • Covers the same material in a positive way.
  • Not awkward for either person.
  • Person will still feel comfortable to ask for help in the workplace.
  • Better work put in towards the future.
While all of this is a brilliant way forward I don't necessarily disagree with feedback. I think it all comes down to the type of person. Some people would be able and it could break others, that is just how we are built it doesn't mean the other is weak. One person can only do so much and so by filling people with too much positivity if they come to fail a certain task it could potentially lead to deeper thoughts example, depression.

When reading article 3 "A fixed mindset could be holding you back" (ABC Radio National, June 25th 2018) I think what she said was so true "raising someone to believe they don't need to develop skills because they're brilliant at everything they do is difficult to sustain" I thought she was very honest with her words, like a child is only learning to read/write adults are only learning to do a job too. So feedback isn't such a bad thing. She spoke about doctors deadly consequences each day and how that could have a massive impact on them if they never made a mistake, to them making one would absolutely ruin them because that's people's lives and families in their hands. But thanks to their strong mindset they are able to move forward knowing that they did all they could. As they have learned to change the way they think.

My personal experience when giving feedback was a little daunting for me, I didn't know what to say and growing up in a society that are known for being "sensitive" its hard to know what way to word the negative parts however I feel like feedforward is the way of the future.
